अग्ने देवाँ इहा वह सादया योनिषु त्रिषु ।
परि भूष पिब ऋतुना ॥ ४ ॥

Agne devaan ihaa vaha saadaya yonishu trishu
Pari bhoosha piba rituna ॥ 4 ॥

Meaning:

अग्ने (Agne): O Agni; O life that moves towards progress; O inner power of light. Here, ‘Agni’ does not refer only to external fire. It refers to the living force that possesses the aspiration for progress and seeks a higher way of life. This word is an invitation to develop noble qualities in life and move towards higher growth.

देवान् (Devaan): Deities; divine qualities; higher virtues. Here, ‘Devas’ does not refer only to external deities; it refers to divine qualities such as truth, peace, self control, compassion, love and wisdom. Accepting such noble qualities into life is true progress.

इह (Iha): Here; in this human life; in this worldly life. This word teaches that human life itself is a precious opportunity for spiritual progress. It instructs us to establish higher qualities not in another world, but in this very life.

वह (Vaha): Bring; lead here; accept and establish. This is an active instruction to bring divine qualities into life and establish them firmly. Seeking and accepting good qualities is the foundation of growth in life.

सादया (Saadaya): Make sit; establish; give a place. The meaning of this word is that divine qualities should not remain merely as thoughts, but should be firmly established in the inner foundations of life.

योनिषु (Yonishu): In the places; in the abodes; in the foundational states. Here, ‘Yoni’ refers to a place of origin or a foundational state. It is used to indicate the places from which the inner activities of a human being arise.

त्रिषु (Trishu): In three; in three places. The three places referred to here are the senses, the mind and the intellect. The functioning and elevation of human life depend upon the condition of these three.

परि (Pari): Around; completely; on all sides. It indicates that the whole of life, and not merely one part of it, should be surrounded and filled with divine qualities.

भूष (Bhoosha): Adorn; beautify; elevate. Here, adornment does not mean external clothing or ornaments. The mantra teaches that adorning life with divine qualities is the true form of ‘adornment’. Purity of thought, speech and action is the highest ornament of a human being.

पिब (Piba): Drink; receive; preserve and experience. Here, ‘Soma drinking’ does not mean drinking an external beverage. Its deeper meaning is to preserve the vital energy produced within the body and establish its benefits in life. The teaching explains that preservation of energy is the true Soma drinking.

ऋतुना (Rituna): At the proper time; without delay; at the appropriate time. This word teaches that protection of vital energy is an action that should not be postponed. Especially during periods when vital energy is abundant, self discipline and preservation of energy are extremely important.

Explanation:

This mantra is a Vedic teaching that deeply explains where the true progress of human life lies. It teaches the higher way of life in which a person fills life with divine qualities, purifies the senses, mind and intellect, protects vital energy and lives accordingly.

The mantra first addresses अग्ने (Agne)”. Here, ‘Agni’ does not refer to external fire; rather, it refers to the living force that seeks progress and desires a higher life. If a human being wants to rise in life, he should seek not only external progress but also inner growth. This mantra teaches that true growth consists in acquiring and living with noble qualities.

The words देवाँ इहा वह (Devaan Ihaa Vaha)” that follow are a profound call to “bring divine qualities into this human life”. Here, ‘Devas’ refers to higher qualities such as truth, peace, self control, compassion, love, wisdom and non violence. Accepting such qualities into human life is true progress. A life that does not welcome good qualities within itself becomes empty, whereas a life that accepts divine qualities becomes filled with light.

The central portion of the mantra, सादया योनिषु त्रिषु (Saadaya Yonishu Trishu)”, gives a very important teaching. The ‘three places’ referred to are the senses, the mind and the intellect. These three form the foundation of human thought, speech and action. If they are left without proper attention, they can become the dwelling places of desires, anger, greed, ignorance and other negative tendencies. To prevent this, the mantra teaches that a person seeking progress should establish divine qualities in all three.

Then the senses function according to knowledge and the path of Yoga; the mind becomes purified and filled with peace, freedom from anger, contentment and patience; the intellect becomes clear and gains the power to understand truth.

After this, the mantra says परि भूष (Pari Bhoosha)”. Its meaning is, “Adorn your life completely.” But here adornment does not mean external display or ornaments. The mantra emphasizes that a person’s true adornment is his character. When vital energy is protected, fearlessness, inner light, strength and discipline develop in human life.

The mind becomes filled with purity, truth, freedom from anger, peace, absence of greed, patience and contentment. The senses help in gaining knowledge and practising Karma Yoga. The hands become engaged in charity, Yajna, non violence, sacrifice and pure actions; speech becomes radiant through self study and elevated speech free from criticism; the body becomes disciplined through austerity; and the heart becomes adorned with simplicity, compassion, gentleness, absence of hostility and freedom from ego.

The concluding teaching of this mantra is contained in पिब ऋतुना (Piba Rituna)”. It means that the vital energy which forms the foundation of all these qualities should be protected and experienced at the proper time. Here, ‘Soma drinking’ does not mean drinking an external beverage; it means protecting the energy produced within the body without wasting it and establishing its benefit in life. Protection of energy is the true Soma drinking, as the mantra clearly teaches.

Therefore, when this mantra is viewed as a whole, it teaches that a human being should transform the senses, mind and intellect into dwelling places of divine qualities. A person who lives by protecting vital energy becomes adorned with higher qualities such as fearlessness, purity of mind, wisdom, compassion and discipline. Thus, the person who establishes the Devas within himself and lives accordingly becomes the true ‘Agni’, the living force moving towards progress, and attains a life filled with physical health, inner light and spiritual elevation.

Conclusion:

This mantra emphasizes that the true progress of human life does not lie in external achievements, but in protecting and elevating the senses, mind and intellect through divine qualities. A human being should bring divine qualities such as truth, peace, self control, compassion and wisdom into life and establish them in the three inner foundations of the senses, mind and intellect. If these are left empty, they can become dwelling places of desire, anger and negative tendencies; but when they are filled with divine qualities, life becomes purified and filled with light.

The foundation for this is the preservation of vital energy, represented here by the preservation of Soma. Living by protecting energy at the proper time is the true Soma drinking. When energy is preserved, higher qualities such as fearlessness, inner radiance, purity of mind, wisdom, yogic discipline, charity, non violence, self study, simplicity, compassion and freedom from ego blossom in human life.

Therefore, this mantra reveals the profound Vedic truth that the person who transforms his inner states into dwelling places of the Devas and lives by protecting vital energy becomes the true progressive ‘Agni’ and attains a life filled with physical health, inner light and spiritual elevation.
