इन्द्र सोमं पिब ऋतुना त्वा विशन्त्विन्दवः ।
मत्सरासस्तदोकसः ॥ 1 ॥

Indra somam piba rituna tva vishantvindavah.
Matsarasastadokasah. ॥ 1 ॥

Meaning:

इन्द्र (Indra): Lord of the senses; life; the inner power of self control. Here, ‘Indra’ does not merely refer to a deity, but indicates the life force and awareness that regulates and controls the senses. It teaches that a person should live with awareness and should properly regulate the body, mind and emotions.

सोमम् (Somam): The vital essence produced from food; the Soma element that gives strength to the body. The nutrients formed as the pure essence of food nourish the body and promote health and mental enthusiasm. These are referred to here as ‘Soma’.

पिब (Piba): Drink; receive; preserve and experience. The deeper meaning of this word is not merely drinking, but preserving the vital essence produced within the body without wasting it, and gaining benefit from it.

ऋतुना (Rituna): At the proper time; without delay; appropriately according to the occasion. The body and the principles of life should be conducted with awareness of time. It emphasizes the importance of protecting health and following food, discipline and lifestyle practices at the proper time.

त्वा (Tva): You; within you. This teaching is not addressed to someone outside; it is an instruction directed toward the inner life of every human being.

विशन्तु (Vishantu): May they enter; may they spread; may they become completely integrated. The idea is that the Soma elements should spread through all parts of the body through the blood and function as vital energy.

इन्दवः (Indavah): Soma elements that give strength; particles of vital energy. The subtle vital essences that give strength to the body, develop resistance to disease, and provide vitality and freshness are called ‘Indavah’ here.

मत्सरासः (Matsarasah): Those that give great joy; those that provide satisfaction; those that create enthusiasm. When the Soma elements in the body remove illness and promote health, natural happiness, fulfillment and enthusiasm arise in the mind. This word refers to that experience of inner joy.

तदोकसः (Tadokasah): Those that lead toward that higher abode; those connected with the state in which the Supreme Reality dwells. A person who preserves the Soma elements through disciplined living develops a sharper intellect. A sharp intellect leads a person toward higher spiritual awareness. Therefore, these Soma elements are regarded as forces that not only support physical health but also guide a person toward awareness of the Divine.

Explanation:

This mantra gives a profound teaching that integrates the physical, mental and spiritual development of human life. This Vedic statement teaches that a person should regulate the senses, preserve the vital energy produced within the body, and through it attain the higher states of health, joy and awareness of the Divine.

The mantra first addresses “इन्द्र (Indra)”. Here, ‘Indra’ does not merely refer to an external deity; rather, it represents the awareness and self control of the living being that regulates and guides the senses. The fundamental message is that a person should possess the ability to control and properly direct emotions, desires and the senses.

The words “सोमम् पिब (Somam Piba)” that follow express an important truth of life. ‘Soma’ refers to the vital essence produced from food and the pure energy that gives strength to the body. ‘Piba’ does not merely mean drinking; it also means preserving and experiencing that vital essence and receiving its benefits. The mantra teaches that the vital energy produced through food, discipline and lifestyle should not be wasted, but should be protected and cultivated.

The word “ऋतुना (Rituna)” gives greater depth to this teaching. It means that everything should take place at the proper time. Eating, sleeping, working, mental discipline and the practices of daily life should all be followed with awareness of the appropriate time. This word teaches that respecting time and living according to proper rhythm is fundamental to physical and mental well being.

The mantra then says “त्वा विशन्तु इन्दवः (Tva Vishantu Indavah)”. Here, ‘Indavah’ refers to the Soma elements or subtle components of vital energy that give strength to the body. The meaning of ‘Vishantu’ is that they should spread throughout all parts of the body. The mantra expresses the wish that the vital essence should spread throughout the body through the circulation of blood, protect the body, resist illness and strengthen vitality. Through this, it indicates that health is not created only by external medicines, but also through the balanced functioning of the vital energy within the body.

The action of these Soma elements is described by the word “मत्सरासः (Matsarasah)”. When health is established in the body and diseases are removed, natural happiness, satisfaction and enthusiasm arise in the mind. This experience of inner joy is referred to as ‘Matsarasah’. It indicates that true happiness does not arise merely from external objects, but from the inner fulfillment that comes through balance between body and mind.

Finally, the word “तदोकसः (Tadokasah)” reveals the spiritual culmination of the mantra. A disciplined way of life that preserves the vital essence produced within the body sharpens the intellect. A sharp intellect develops the ability to recognize truth. That knowledge ultimately leads a person toward higher awareness of the Divine and awareness of the Supreme Reality. Therefore, the Soma elements are considered beneficial not only for physical health but also for spiritual elevation.

Thus, when the mantra is understood as a whole, it teaches that a person should regulate the senses, live a disciplined life at the proper time, and preserve the vital energy produced within the body. That vital essence spreads throughout the body, removes illness, and provides health, happiness and mental fulfillment. The same vital energy also sharpens the intellect and guides a person toward higher spiritual experience and awareness of the Divine. Therefore, this mantra stands as a philosophy of life that integrates physical health, mental happiness and spiritual progress.

Conclusion:

This mantra is a Vedic teaching directed toward the complete well being of human life. It emphasizes that a person should regulate the senses, live a disciplined life at the proper time, and preserve and cultivate the vital Soma energy produced from food. These Soma elements spread throughout the body, remove illness, and provide health, strength, mental satisfaction and natural happiness. Furthermore, a disciplined life that preserves them sharpens the intellect and guides a person toward higher thought and awareness of the Divine. Thus, this mantra conveys the profound truth that physical health, mental enthusiasm and spiritual elevation are all established through disciplined living and the preservation of vital energy.
