असि होता न ईड्यः ॥ ३ ॥
Agne Devaan Ihaa Vaha Jajnaano VriktaBarhishe
Asi Hota Na Eedyaḥ ॥ 3 ॥
Meaning
अग्ने (Agne): O Agni; O God who gives progress; O Supreme Being as Agrani. Here, ‘Agne’ does not refer merely to external fire. It refers to the Supreme Being as Agrani, who is the cause of the complete progress and spiritual elevation of the human being. The Supreme Being who leads the human being from darkness to light and guides him towards inner transformation and divine growth is called ‘Agni’ here.
देवान् (Devaan): The gods; divine qualities; noble states of mind. Here, ‘Devaan’ does not refer merely to external deities. It refers to divine qualities such as compassion, truth, self-control, devotion, and knowledge that should develop within the human being. Through the grace of God, such noble qualities arise in human life.
इह (Ihaa): Here; in this life; in this worldly life. This word teaches that spiritual elevation is not something that should be attained only after death. The meaning is that a human being should develop divine qualities and rise spiritually in this very life.
वह (Vaha): Bring; provide; bless. This word expresses a prayer addressed to God. It teaches that along with human effort, divine grace is necessary for divine qualities to fully blossom. Therefore, the devotee approaches God saying, “Bless me so that these qualities may grow within me.”
जज्ञानः (Jajnaano): One who appears; one who arises; one who shines. This word indicates the inner radiance of God. When God manifests within the human heart, darkness disappears and light spreads there. Where divine light appears, demonic tendencies cannot remain. Thus divine qualities naturally begin to grow.
वृक्तबर्हिषे (VriktaBarhishe): For the one whose heart has been freed from tendencies; for the purified inner being. ‘Vrikta’ means removed or taken away; ‘Barhis’ means the sacred seat that has been spread out or the inner space. Here it refers to the heart from which tendencies, lust, and impure thoughts have been removed. Such a pure heart becomes fertile ground suitable for sowing the seeds of divine qualities. Otherwise, there is a danger that the old tendencies may grow again.
असि (Asi): You are; You alone are. This word emphasizes the active reality of God. It indicates that elevating the human being and giving divine qualities are possible only through the grace of God.
होता (Hota): Hota; the one who invokes; the one who gives noble qualities. Here, ‘Hota’ does not refer merely to the one who offers the oblation in a Yajna. God is presented here as the one who brings noble qualities into human life and gives what is good. The inner strength and noble qualities necessary for a human being to progress on the path of life are obtained through divine grace.
नः (Nah): For us; to us. This word expresses the humble prayer of the devotee. It teaches that God is not meant for one person alone; He is the common source of grace for all living beings.
ईड्यः (Eedyah): Worthy of praise; worthy of being glorified; worthy of worship. The concluding idea of this mantra is contained in this word. God alone is the highest goal of human life and the One worthy of praise. It is in order to attain Him that a human being meditates upon His qualities. When God manifests within the heart, lust and demonic tendencies are destroyed, and divine qualities blossom. Therefore, living by praising and meditating upon God is the true path of spiritual growth.
Explanation
This mantra deeply presents the fundamental truth of spiritual transformation in human life. Its primary message is that God, the Agrani who leads the human being towards complete progress and a higher life, should be at the centre of life. Here, ‘Agni’ is not external fire; it is the radiant power of the Supreme Being that removes the darkness of ignorance and leads the human being towards inner transformation and divine growth. Therefore, the devotee prays to God to purify his heart and grant him divine qualities in this very life.
The ‘Devaan’ mentioned in the mantra does not refer merely to external deities; it refers to the higher divine qualities that should blossom within the human heart, such as compassion, truth, self-control, devotion, and knowledge. This teaches that the true elevation of human life does not lie in the accumulation of external wealth, but in the development of inner qualities. These qualities do not arise automatically; they take root in life when divine grace and conscious awareness come together.
The word ‘Ihaa’ emphasizes that this spiritual growth is not something to be expected only after death. The call of the Vedas is that a human being should purify the heart and attain the divine state in this very life. For this reason, the devotee approaches God with the prayer “Vaha”, meaning “Bless me with these qualities”. Although human effort is necessary, this mantra clearly explains that divine grace is required for divine qualities to fully blossom.
Along with this, the word ‘VriktaBarhishe’ reveals a profound psychological truth. A heart filled with tendencies, lust, impure thoughts, and desires cannot provide sufficient space for divine growth. Therefore, the heart must first become pure. A heart from which tendencies have been removed becomes like fertile ground, ready to receive the seeds of divine qualities. But the mantra also teaches that if noble qualities are not sown in that empty space, there is a danger that the old tendencies may grow again. Therefore, spiritual life does not end merely with removing negative qualities; its fulfillment lies in cultivating noble qualities in their place.
The word ‘Jajnaano’ expresses the inner radiance of God. When God manifests in the heart, darkness cannot remain there. Demonic tendencies, lust, and ignorance naturally disappear where light appears. Similarly, when divine light shines in the human heart, demonic emotions are destroyed and divine qualities certainly begin to blossom.
By calling God ‘Hota’, the mantra indicates that He is the one who brings noble qualities into human life and guides the human being on the path of elevation. A human being does not progress alone on the path of life; divine grace provides the inner strength, guidance, and goodness that he needs. Therefore, the devotee humbly prays with the word “Nah”, meaning “for us”, recognizing that God is the common source of grace for everyone.
Finally, the word ‘Eedyah’ reveals the highest truth of the mantra. God alone is the highest goal of life and the One worthy of praise. It is in order to attain Him that a human being meditates upon His qualities. A life that accepts God as its goal gives a deeper inner fulfillment than external success. When God manifests in the heart, demonic tendencies are destroyed and divine qualities such as compassion, devotion, knowledge, and peace begin to grow.
Therefore, the complete teaching of this mantra is that a human being should purify his heart from tendencies and seek God in order to receive divine qualities in this very life. God, the Agrani of human progress, is the Hota who gives noble qualities and the Eedyah who is the highest goal of life. When God manifests in the heart, the darkness of demonic tendencies is destroyed, divine light spreads, and human life attains true spiritual elevation and pure fulfillment. This is the profound Vedic teaching given by this mantra.
Conclusion
This mantra deeply teaches that the true progress of human life does not lie in external achievements, but in the purity of the heart and the development of divine qualities. The Supreme Being as Agrani becomes the spiritual guide who leads the human being from darkness to light and causes divine qualities such as compassion, truth, devotion, and knowledge to blossom in the purified heart from which tendencies have been removed. When a human being purifies his inner being and seeks divine grace in this very life, demonic tendencies and the darkness arising from lust disappear before the light of God. God, who is the Hota who gives noble qualities, the highest goal of life, and the One worthy of praise, should be accepted as the centre of human life, and His qualities should be contemplated and lived. When God thus manifests within the heart, life becomes filled with divine light and attains true spiritual elevation, inner fulfillment, and a pure way of living. This is the profound essence of this mantra.
