Meaning
असृग्रम् (Asrugram) I have offered, expressed, presented, and surrendered. Here, the individual soul offers its words of praise to the Divine and dedicates its righteous actions to the Divine. This is not merely praise expressed through words; it is true divine praise expressed through actions performed for the welfare of the world. Without the egoistic feeling of “I am doing this”, the devotee offers all actions with the attitude, “All these are for You.”
इन्द्र (Indra) The powerful Divine, the destroyer of enemies, the Lord of power, the Supreme Reality. Here, “Indra” does not refer merely to an ordinary deity. It signifies the Supreme Power that destroys inner enemies such as desire, craving, ignorance, and ego within the human being. The devotee invokes the Divine Power that purifies the mind.
ते (Te) Your, belonging to You, for You. This indicates that the devotee dedicates his actions and praises not for himself, but to the Divine.
गिरः (Girah) Words of praise, sacrificial utterances, words glorifying the Divine, expressions of devotion through action. “Girah” does not mean merely verbal praise. Righteous actions, good deeds performed for the welfare of the world, and a life lived as a sacrifice are the true “Girah”. The mantra teaches that devotion expressed through action is the highest form of praise.
प्रति (Prati) Towards, directed to, approaching. Here, it indicates that all praises are directed towards the Divine. All pure actions of a human being ultimately reach the presence of the Divine.
त्वाम् (Tvam) You, You alone, the Supreme Reality. The devotee offers the fruits of his actions not for worldly recognition, but for attaining the Divine.
उदहासत (Udhasata) Rose upward, ascended, reached. Actions performed with remembrance of the Divine and concern for the welfare of the world rise to the level of spiritual offering and reach the Divine presence. They are no longer ordinary actions; they become a sacrifice.
अजोषाः (Ajosha) Accepted with love, received joyfully, accepted with affection. The Divine accepts the devotee’s pure actions and praises with compassion. The true meaning is that selfless actions performed for the welfare of the world are pleasing to the Divine.
वृषभम् (Vrishabham) The one who showers all blessings, the giver of bliss, the one who showers all forms of happiness. Here, the Divine is described as the source from which grace, bliss, and goodness flow into the world. The ultimate source of the goodness that arises in the world through human righteous actions is the Divine.
पतिम् (Patim) Protector, guardian, sustainer, Lord. The devotee recognizes that the Divine alone sustains, protects, and guides the world. It expresses the faith that even through the righteous actions performed by human beings, it is ultimately the Divine who works for the welfare of the world.
Explanation
This Vedic mantra deeply conveys that the true elevation of human life does not lie in the external success of one’s actions, but in the inner attitude of surrender with which those actions are performed. The devotee offers his words of praise and righteous actions to the Supreme Reality, not with the egoistic feeling of “I am doing this”, but with the attitude, “All these are for You.” Here, devotion is not merely verbal praise; the important teaching is that every good action performed for the welfare of the world becomes a sacrifice directed towards the Divine.
The divine power referred to as “Indra” is not merely a symbol of external strength. It represents the Supreme Power that destroys inner enemies such as desire, ego, ignorance, and craving and purifies the mind. Pure thoughts and righteous actions directed towards the Divine rise above ordinary activities and become offerings that lead to spiritual elevation. Actions performed with remembrance of the Divine rise and reach the Divine presence; they become like sacred offerings placed into the sacrificial fire that burns for the welfare of the world.
This mantra also reveals another profound truth: selfless service is dear to the Divine. The Divine lovingly and compassionately accepts the righteous actions performed by a human being with a pure heart for the welfare of the world. Actions accepted through divine grace further purify the inner being and guide the person towards a higher state of bliss.
Through the word “वृषभम् (Vrishabham)”, the Divine is described as the gracious source from which all blessings flow. The mantra teaches that divine grace is the ultimate foundation of goodness, peace, bliss, and prosperity that arise in the world. When a person understands that the Divine Power works behind the righteous actions performed by human beings, humility naturally arises within.
Through the word “पतिम् (Patim)”, the Divine is described as the protector of the world, the Lord who guides life, and the Supreme Sustainer who cares for everything. This understanding enables a human being to recognize the responsibility of dedicating life not merely to personal gain, but to the welfare of the world.
Therefore, the central teaching of this mantra is that true devotion is not merely in words, but in selfless righteous actions; true sacrifice is service performed for the welfare of the world; and true spirituality is the attitude of giving up ego and surrendering everything to the Divine. The life of a person who possesses such humility and devotion becomes filled with divine grace and bliss and becomes a source of welfare for the world as well as spiritual progress for oneself.
Conclusion
This Vedic mantra presents the highest spiritual truth of human life with great depth. Every good action performed by a human being, when it is done for the welfare of the world and with a selfless attitude, rises to the level of a sacrifice offered to the Divine. The mantra clearly teaches that true devotion does not lie merely in verbal praise, but in ego-free righteous actions, service for the welfare of the world, and an attitude of complete surrender to the Divine.
When a person does not claim the fruits of his actions as his own, but recognizes the grace of the Supreme Reality as the source of everything, humility, purity, and spiritual elevation blossom within. The mantra teaches that the Divine destroys inner enemies such as desire, ego, and ignorance and remains the gracious protector who sustains and safeguards the world.
Therefore, selfless service, welfare of the world, righteous action, remembrance of the Divine, freedom from ego, and complete surrender to the Divine are the higher paths that lead a human being towards spiritual fulfillment and lasting bliss. This is the final teaching of this mantra.
