अग्निर्होता कविक्रतुः सत्यश्चित्रश्रवस्तमः ।
देवो देवेभिरा गमत् ॥ ५ ॥                                                                           

Agnir hotā kavikratuḥ satyaś citraśravastamaḥ |
Devo devebhir ā gamat || 5 ||

Meaning

अग्निः (Agniḥ) – Agni / God / Divine Light. Here, “Agni” does not merely refer to physical fire. It signifies: the Supreme Reality (Paramātman), the Divine Power that governs the universe, the divine light that gives life to all creation, the power of divine wisdom that awakens the human heart. This word teaches that God is the fundamental source of every Yajña and every righteous action.

होता (Hotā) – The Performer of the Yajña / The Receiver of the Offering. Although it appears that human beings perform the Yajña, in reality, it is God alone who conducts every Yajña. Human beings are: merely instruments, merely channels through which His work is accomplished. The Supreme Being alone is the true “Hotā” (the Divine Priest) of the great cosmic Yajña called creation.

कविक्रतुः (Kavikratuḥ) – The All-knowing and Perfectly Wise One. Kavi  means the far-seeing One, the One who knows everything. Kratu means: the power of action, the power of wisdom and intelligent will. Together, “Kavikratuḥ” refers to the One who knows everything completely and acts with absolute perfection. God knows: the past, the present, the future. Therefore, there is truly no imperfection in His creation. Because of the limitations of human understanding, some things may appear useless or painful. However, as our wisdom grows, we gradually realize the order, harmony, and perfection of the universe.

सत्यः (Satyaḥ) – The Truthful One / The Eternal Truth. God is: the unchanging Truth, the eternal Reality, the Supreme Being free from all falsehood. The word also carries the meaning: “Satṣu Bhavaḥ” — the One who dwells in the hearts of the righteous.  Although God is present everywhere, He reveals Himself most clearly in the hearts of those whose minds are pure.

चित्रश्रवस्तमः (Citraśravastamaḥ) – The One of Wondrous Glory / The Source of Marvelous Wisdom Citra means: wonderful, marvelous, extraordinary. Śravas means: glory, fame, wisdom. God is: the source of Vedic wisdom, the fountainhead of all knowledge, the One who illumines the human heart with divine understanding. Without any external effort, He causes wisdom to shine within pure hearts. Therefore, He is: the One of supreme glory, the infinite source of all wisdom.

देवः (Devaḥ) – The Divine One / The Source of Divine Qualities.The word “Deva” signifies: divine light, divine virtues, purity, compassion,truth. God is the perfect embodiment and fullness of every divine quality.

देवेभिः (Devebhiḥ) – With the Devas / With Divine Qualities. Here, “Devas” does not merely refer to celestial deities. It represents: divine virtues, noble qualities, truth,compassion, self-sacrifice, righteous conduct. When God dwells in the human heart, these divine qualities naturally manifest.ஙThis word also conveys the profound truth that it is only through the cultivation of divine virtues that one can attain God.

आ गमत् (Ā Gamat) – May He Come / May He Come to Us. This is a heartfelt prayer. Its inner meaning is: “O Lord! May You come and dwell within our hearts together with Your divine qualities.” When a person: cultivates noble virtues, purifies the mind, lives a divine and righteous life. God manifests Himself within that person’s heart.

This Vedic mantra profoundly explains the divine nature of the Supreme Being and the Divine Power that operates behind every activity in the universe. Although it appears that human beings perform various actions in the world, this mantra teaches that God alone is the ultimate source and driving force behind everything. Without any external effort, He causes the light of divine knowledge to shine within pure hearts. This mantra thus teaches that the Supreme Being is the infinite source of all knowledge and wisdom.

The word “Devaḥ” refers to God as the embodiment of divine light and the source of purity, compassion, truth, and every other divine virtue. The word “Devebhiḥ” emphasizes the importance of these divine qualities. He is actively present in every action, in every living being, and in every noble thought. When a person gives up ego and cultivates divine virtues, his own heart becomes the temple in which God dwells.

God is “Kavikratu”—the Perfect Wisdom that knows everything and acts flawlessly. Because of the limitations of human understanding, the world may sometimes appear to have imperfections. In reality, however, God’s creation possesses perfect order and a profound purpose. As human knowledge and wisdom grow, one gradually begins to perceive this divine perfection.

God is the embodiment of Truth and reveals Himself in pure hearts. He is the infinite source of all wisdom. When a person purifies the mind and cultivates divine virtues such as truthfulness, compassion, self-sacrifice, and righteous conduct, the divine light naturally manifests within the heart. This mantra clearly teaches that divine virtues themselves are the path to realizing God.

This mantra teaches us that attaining God is not achieved merely through external rituals; it is attained by cultivating a heart filled with divine virtues.

When a person gives up ego, realizes that he is merely an instrument of God, and lives with noble virtues, his life becomes divine. Then the heart is illumined, wisdom blossoms, and life becomes filled with peace, purpose, and spiritual fulfillment.
